What is Juneteenth?
Celebrated each year on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom. Although the Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people in Confederate states free in 1863, news of emancipation did not immediately reach everyone.
On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved African Americans were free—more than two years after the proclamation had been issued. For generations, Juneteenth has been observed through gatherings, storytelling, music, food, education, and community celebration. In 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in the United States.
Today, Juneteenth is both a commemoration of freedom and an opportunity to celebrate Black history, culture, resilience, and progress.
Why is the Color Red Important?
