Welcome back to another recap of Details University Live! In this episode, our host Corrine Heck, CEO of Details Flowers Software, sits down for a fascinating chat with Angela Oliver, the Chief Executive Officer of the British Florist Association (BFA).
From the rich history of the UK floral industry to behind-the-scenes secrets of the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show, Angela shares what it takes to lead a thriving cross-industry community—and what happens when you accidentally run into royalty!
Angela Oliver isn’t just a CEO sitting in an office; she is deeply rooted in the industry's soil. In addition to leading the BFA, Angela is a passionate plantswoman and the owner of a specialist nursery in sunny Bedfordshire, where she grows Alstroemeria plants for consumers.
Before stepping into the chief executive role, Angela spent 8 years as a commercial director, running forestry operations and a specialist nursery. When the long-time manager of the BFA retired, Angela stepped into a part-time role that rapidly evolved. Within a year, a structural reorganization placed her at the helm of the UK's premier trade association for florists.
While many assume European trade associations have centuries of history, the BFA was officially formed relatively recently in 1948.
Fun Fact: The BFA was born out of political activism! A group of florists originally banded together to lobby the UK government against a proposed funeral flower tax.
In 1977, the BFA expanded by taking over a sister organization that represented wholesalers and growers, uniting the entire supply chain under one professional umbrella. Today, it stands as the ultimate gold seal of approval for florists across the United Kingdom.
One of the most striking differences between the US and UK floral landscapes is the sheer scale of structured, professional education.
The BFA ensures these standards remain incredibly high. Training and Education Directors Jo Biddle and Rebecca Hough work hand in hand with UK awarding bodies such as City & Guilds and Lantra to maintain rigorous professional qualifications.
Both growing and floristry share a common challenge: intense seasonal peaks and quiet troughs. The UK industry just wrapped up its massive consecutive peaks of Valentine's Day and Mother's Day (which falls in March in the UK), proving that consumer demand for local, fresh flowers is as strong as ever.
Angela notes that dealing with a natural product teaches unique business resilience:
"You have to be a little bit frugal in the quieter times, and you have to think outside of the box... Anyone that works outside with nature has to be a quite resilient, resourceful person."
Angela’s core leadership philosophy is that we are stronger together. Over the last year, the BFA has aggressively stepped out of its "bubble" to collaborate with broader industries like horticulture, logistics, and the Fresh Produce Consortium to tackle shared challenges like rising staffing costs, premises overheads, and post-Brexit border trade logistics.
The conversation took a thrilling turn as Angela recounted her experiences at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which she proudly calls "the best show in the world."
While BFA florists dominated the competitive design spaces—including a BFA member taking home the prestigious Florist of the Year gold medal—Angela was there exhibiting her own nursery's stunning Alstroemeria.
Angela shared a spectacular behind-the-scenes story of security sweeps, bomb-sniffing dogs, and a close encounter with the monarch during the exclusive "private view" hours:
"I wasn’t on the official royal lineup... but the King came in, saw my stand and my display... He very kindly caught my eye, came over and stopped, and we had a chat about Alstroemeria—about growing them, if they are easy to grow, and where the nursery was. We had a really lovely chat... it absolutely made my year."
As a true plantsman and horticulturist, King Charles III was an incredible advocate for the green industry.
If Chelsea is the public stage, FleurEx (occurring this October) is where the UK floral industry truly comes together to learn, network, and celebrate. The event recently won "Event of the Year" by the Trade Association Forum, and Jo Biddle won "Volunteer of the Year" for her monumental 18-month project updating the Professional Florist Manual.
Details Flowers Software is proud to be the official sponsor of the FleurEx Business Sessions this year! While the speaker lineup is still under wraps, attendees can expect cutting-edge business topics, masterclasses, and an extended awards evening with a bigger dance floor that goes until 1:00 AM. The BFA will also be introducing a brand-new award category: The Shining Star.
The BFA has recently launched a Community Membership tier, opening its doors to gardeners, hobbyists, and anyone invested in the floral industry alongside their existing student, corporate, and business owner tiers.
How to connect:
As Angela perfectly summarized: "We're real people behind the scenes, we're lots of fun, and we like to bring people together."
